Summer Tip: Check Porches
When you and your kids head outside for summer barbeques, parties, and relaxation, don’t assume that your porch escaped the winter months unharmed.
The City of Chicago released this tip reminding citizens to check their porches, decks, outdoor stairways, and balconies for rotting wood, water damage, loose pieces, and other effects of weather. No matter what city you’re in, ensuring the structural integrity of your outdoor premises is important for everyone because it can prevent serious injuries.
If you do find something wrong with your porch, deck, stairs, or balcony, call your landlord or property manager if you are a renter. Otherwise, find a local contractor to take a look soon, so that you, your family, and friends can enjoy the summer safely.
Ten years ago, a porch collapsed in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, killing 13 people. This unfortunate incident can happen anywhere, so if you find loose hardware or wobbly wood, take the necessary steps to fix it and avoid a serious accident!
