Why child safety?

As cliché as it sounds, your whole life changes when you become a parent.  Your main job becomes protecting your child.  I’m fortunate enough to have three wonderful boys – which also means I have three times the protection to provide.

I’m also a trial lawyer who represents individuals and families who have been horribly injured or killed.  I’ve seen families torn apart because of some company’s or some person’s careless behavior.  It is life-shattering enough to see this happen to an adult, but it is especially gut-wrenching to see it happen to a child.  And while my profession deals with trying to repair the damage by getting compensation, it is limited to dealing with the aftereffects.  It is important to me in my professional life not only to help the families of injured children, but to prevent these injuries from happening in the first place.

One injured child is one too many.  That is why I’ve created this blog.  After helping the family of a child who drowned at a public pool, I’ve become more aware of pool safety.  After seeing the ramifications of drivers ignoring stop signs in school zones, I’ve become a more cautious driver and a more alert parent while walking with my boys in the neighborhood.  I no longer assume a car is going to stop at the sign.  We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t want to prevent people, especially children, from getting hurt.  In my daily life, I do everything I can to protect my boys.

My mission is to educate, inform, and establish a dialog with the sole purpose of preventing child injury by promoting child safety.  This blog is a resource for parents looking for information on up-to-date product recalls and safety concerns, and important safety issues in our schools, neighborhoods, and homes. As parents we work to find the right balance between protecting our kids while still fostering healthy, independent play.  I hope this blog will help us achieve that balance.

Just wanted to say thanks. your blog looks fantastic. I think this idea will come in handy, and be beneficial to parents everywhere!
I live in louisville, ky. A city in a state that is sadly, leading the country in abuse related child deaths. It is a sad thing. I’ve been wondering if there are any good people left in the world. Seems like there may be!
